Hon Chairperson, the hon Coleman spoke of the Kakamas Hydro Electric Power project, and I would like to emphasise how important this is.
I visited the plant in Kakamas about three Sundays ago, and the foreign investor was very complimentary about government's renewable energy programme. It's a programme led by the Minister of Energy and what that project highlighted in the town of Kakamas is the success of renewable energy.
In fact, over the last 15 months we have launched about 33 solar or wind hydro plants. They are bringing energy onto the grid. It also shows the energy that is actually connected to the grid - 1 800 megawatts. Of course, it's not strictly comparable, but if you want to get an approximation of what that means, then it's roughly the installed capacity of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. It also emphasises the important role of the Industrial Development Corporation, IDC. It has now invested R13,5 billion in renewable energy. Finally, it emphasises the importance of our infrastructure programme as a whole.
During that same week when the programme was launched, the Deputy President led a team of people to Carnarvon in the Northern Cape to launch a radio telescope. We had the Kakamas project, and we also had a project in Pofadder. All of these emphasise the importance of infrastructure, the focus of government, the importance of renewable energy and the partnerships we are developing with the private sector. Thank you.
