Chair, I hereby move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes with sadness the death of former international cricketer, Basil D'Oliveira, last Saturday;
2) further notes that Basil D'Oliveira was unquestionably one of the best cricketers South Africa has produced, yet he was not given the opportunity to wear the green cap of his country, simply because he was not white;
3) further notes that Basil D'Oliveira, who was driven to move to England by the discriminatory policies, was eventually selected for the England team in 1966, and in 1968 he was again selected for the England team to tour South Africa but the apartheid government refused to allow him to play against South Africa; and
4) while remembering our painful past, salutes Basil D'Oliveira and pays tribute to him as one of South Africa's great cricketing sons, and calls on all South Africans to ensure that all our children are afforded equal opportunities to develop and participate anywhere in our country.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
