Chairperson, on 16 April 2008 the constituency office organised a community conference on safety and security. The ANC resolved in their January 8 statement that communities should be mobilised in the fight against crime.
The conference, which took place at the Strand municipal offices, was addressed by the Deputy Minister of Safety and Security, hon Susan Shabangu. It was attended by 100 participants from 46 community organisations, churches, NGOs, political parties, neighbourhood watches and community police forums.
The conference focused on the following matters: the role of the community in ensuring safer communities; the role of neighbourhood watches; the role of community police forums; the negative influence of drug abuse on the youth and steps to curb drug abuse; crime at schools and proactive steps to deal with it; and encouraging the community not to buy stolen goods.
The participants resolved that community members should be motivated to join community police forums and neighbourhood watches to ensure a safe and secure living environment.
