Chairperson, one of the challenges facing the SA Police Service in the fight against rampant crime is to uproot elements of criminality amongst its members. To have more than 300 policemen who are accused of serious crimes such as murder, rape and armed robbery is a cause for great concern.
Perceptions of the police as inefficient and corrupt are in fact on the increase. The very fact that 120 policemen were dismissed in the past two years for such heinous crimes has, to a certain extent, justified these perceptions.
The IFP believes not only in tightening security checks at entry level, but also in getting rid of the rotten apples and prosecuting them as a matter of urgency. It is obvious that one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel.
The perception that the police can easily escape the Rule of Law must be proved to be wrong. The police must be clean, proper and fit to serve the people.
