3.1 The Department's core mandate is to contribute to maintaining and protecting a just, peaceful and safe society by enforcing decisions and sentences of the courts in the manner prescribed by legislation, by detaining all inmates in safe custody while ensuring their human dignity and by promoting the rehabilitation, social responsibility and human development of all offenders. 3.2 To improve service delivery on its core mandate the Department has identified three key priority strategic focus areas which have been aligned with Government's medium term strategic framework (MTSF), the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster's programme of action for revamping the criminal justice system as well as objectives contained in the White Paper on Corrections.
