Manpower was budgeted to increase by 100 people over the next 6 months due to the expected increase in sales with the prospect of increased sales as a result of the expected launch of the new car models. ALT noted that retrenchments started in June 2008, where 231 employees were retrenched. At that stage, ALT had lost the E-class business, which formed a bigger part of its turnover, from Mercedes Benz. ALT also indicated that the NUMSA was informed of this at an early stage and various informative meetings were held with employees.
