Hon Chairperson, I hereby give notice that on the next sitting day of the Council I shall move on behalf of the DA:
That the Council -
1) notes that the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Ms Edna Molewa stated at the 2011 Green Drop Awards, which examine the state of water treatment plants, that the number of waste water plants assessed had increased from 449 systems in 2009 to 821 systems;
2) further notes that the Minister also said that the report showed that the number of waste water systems that scored more than 50% had decreased from 49% in 2009 to 44% in 2011, which highlighted the lack of human capacity and the inadequate maintenance of treatment systems;
3) acknowledges that the water treatment systems in the Limpopo and Free State provinces were particularly bad, scoring 24% and 32%, respectively;
4) recognises that the Western Cape was given 19 Green Drop Awards, the highest number for any province in 2011; and
5) acknowledges that urgent attention must be given to this problem in provinces which fared poorly with regard to inadequate waste water systems.
