That the House -
1) notes that during the sixth EDCTP Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 10 October to 12 October 2011, Professor Salim Abdool Karim received the Outstanding Senior African Scientist 2011 award for his research in the fields of HIV and TB-HIV prevention and treatment;
2) also notes that Prof Karim serves as pro-vice chancellor (research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and as director of the Centre for the Aids Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA);
3) recalls that Prof Karim and his wife, Prof Quarraisha Abdool Karim, made international headlines last year when the positive results of the CAPRISA 004 trial proved that the Tenofovir antiretroviral gel considerably reduces the risk of sexually transmitted HIV infections for women;
4) acknowledges a numerous prestigious awards that have been awarded to Prof Karim, namely, the South African Medical Association's Gold Medal Award Fellowship in Art and Science of Medicine in 2011, the Drug Information Association's President's Award for outstanding achievements in world health, the Allan Rosenfield Alumni Award for 2011, and the Academy of Science in South Africa's Science for Society Gold Medal Award;
5) congratulates Prof Salim and Prof Quarraisha Abdool Karim, who are co-principal directors of the CAPRISA 004 clinical trial team, for winning the Department of Science and Technology's NSTF-BHP Billiton Award for research leading to innovation;
6) further acknowledges that Prof Quarraisha Abdool Karim won the Department of Science and Technology's NSTF-BHP Billiton award for Distinguished Women in Science: Life, Natural and Engineering Science;
7) recognises the commitment and dedication of Prof Salim and Prof Quarraisha Abdool Karim in their endeavours and the positive impact these have on medicine in general and on the lives of millions; and
8) commends Prof Salim and Prof Quarraisha Karim for their achievements.
