Plans to address the identified challenges: - The municipality employed an experienced senior accountant who was responsible for preparing financial statements and asset management activities. - The municipality established a risk management division (August 2010) and it was assisting the asset management unit in identifying asset management's control weaknesses and thereafter designing detecting and preventative controls aimed at ensuring that the municipality's assets were well managed and accounted for. - Asset reconciliations were going to be performed on a monthly basis. This was going to assist in ensuring that additions at year-end as per the asset register agreed with the general ledger. - The municipality was considering alternatives on how to deal with the old assets for which there were no maps and records.
