7. As matters currently stand, the Cuban economic system is that of a dual economy that operates in an integrated manner. The national, 'peso-economy' applies to most Cubans, providing them with free education, free health care, universal employment, unemployment compensation, disability and retirement benefits as well as the basic necessities of life, such as housing, utilities, basic foodstuff and some entertainment at very low cost. The hard currency, market economy operates in the tourist, international and export sectors and substantially sustains (and subsidises) the socialist economy.
