The National Environmental Management: Waste Act, Act No 59 of 2008, will allow us to address some of the waste management challenges we have been grappling with for decades. Last year the Cabinet approved the National Waste Management Strategy, which was developed in accordance with the Waste Act. This is a government-wide action plan targeting recycling, job creation and the development of small, medium and micro enterprises. It includes the implementation of "Extended Producer Responsibility" through the development of industry waste management plans and the declaration of priority waste. It also identified the need for 800 environmental management inspectors at various levels of government to implement the Waste Act.
