Our various implementation programmes linked to the Expanded Public Works Programme are well known - rightly so - for their ability to give resources and the dignity of work to the previously disadvantaged. What is sometimes overlooked is the value of the work that is being done. For example, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has calculated that the value of the water saved through the clearing of invasive alien species, which is the focus of our Working for Water programme and which the Deputy Minister is working on, is R400 billion overall since the beginning of this programme. Furthermore, there are many other benefits, including those relating to biological diversity, food security, soil erosion, siltation of dams, destructive wild fires and much more. All these add to the return on investment. Another example relates to the Working on Fire programme. Forestry SA has calculated that the damage caused to the forestry industry by major fires in August 2008 was worth about R3,6 billion. This could have been double, if it had not been for the Working on Fire partnership.
