Cabinet resolved to establish a new institute to ensure the nurturing of Research and Development skills in engineering and science. Despite being housed under the CEF group of companies, the current funding for SANERI comes from the Department of Science and Technology, and was split into two main areas, the first being human capital development, concerning the development particularly of post-graduate students at universities and the second area being project development. Among a variety of SANERI's many projects is silicon beneficiation for photovoltaic panels, integrated low-income housing and sustainable energy supply, green transport, solar traffic lights and other concentrated solar energy technology.
