As part of the speech, infrastructure development projects were identified by the President and focused on rail, road and water. He furthermore mentioned the intention to unlock possible mining potential around the mining areas, including facilitation in beneficiation of minerals. The Minister of Finance confirmed the commitment of government to addressing the challenges of creating jobs, reducing poverty, building infrastructure and expanding the economy of the country. He also identified the infrastructure investment as one of the central priorities of the 2012 Budget. He mentioned that the budget supports job creation, with a particular focus on unemployed youth. However, he called on business to support the infrastructure development project. The Minister of Finance also stated that the 2012 Budget Review identified 43 major infrastructure projects amounting to R3.2 trillion in expenditure over the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) period. The Minister of Finance announced that R845 billion has been approved for the MTEF period, of which just under R300 billion is in the energy sector and R262 billion in transport and logistics projects.
