Municipalities were allocated R40.582 billion or 3.8 per cent of the nationally raised revenue in the 2013/14 financial year excluding conditional grants and the sharing of the general fuel levy. The local government equitable share increased by R3.2 billion or 8.6 per cent compared to a revised estimate of R37.373 billion in the 2012/13 financial year. Over the MTEF the local government equitable share increases by R9.626 billion from R40.582 billion in the 2013/14 financial year to R50.208 billion in the 2015/16 financial year. For the 2013 MTEF, the local government equitable share formula has been updated with data from the 2011 Census and the formula has been revised. The impact of the updates and revisions on the local government equitable share is phased in over the next five years.
