Available estimates show that we have many young people across the globe, compared to children and adults. Internationally, the youth aged 15 to 25 years constitute 1,1 billion people, or 18% of the global population today. Youth and children in the age group 0 to 24 years constitute 40% of the world's population. In most African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Zambia, children and the youth constitute over 60% of the total population, with young people constituting about a third, or 30%. In South Africa, children and young people constitute 70% of the population, while the youth aged between 14 and 35 constitute 41,2% of the population. In the Southern Africa Development Community region, those who are younger than age 35 constitute 76% of the population. These figures therefore indicate that the population of Africa and our region is indeed young and getting younger.
