Hon Speaker and hon members, I move without notice: That the House -
1) notes that one of our stalwarts and freedom fighters, Tata Andrew Mokete Mlangeni, celebrates his 87th birthday today;
2) further notes that this political activist, Rivonia Trialist and former Robben Island prisoner was born in Prospect township in Soweto in 1926;
3) recalls that poverty and financial problems forced him to leave school at an early age and thereafter he worked in several industries where he experienced worker exploitation;
4) further recalls that in 1951 he joined the African National Congress Youth League and in 1954 he joined the African National Congress (ANC), where he displayed his commitment and dedication to the revolutionary struggle for social justice and equality;
5) acknowledges that even though he was sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island he never wavered from his principles of belief for nonracialism, nonsexism, human dignity and prosperity for all;
6) further acknowledges that amongst the awards he received was the Isithwalandwe, the highest honour awarded by the ANC to those who have made an outstanding contribution and sacrifice to the liberation struggle; and
7) congratulates Tata Mlangeni on his birthday and wishes him many happy returns.
As the ANC, we are proud that he is still ably contributing to the transformation of the country. [Applause.]
Agreed to.
