Deputy Speaker, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes that on Sunday, 13 July 2014, the South African author Nadine Gordimer passed away at the age of 90;
2) acknowledges that Gordimer was not only a colossus of African writing, but also a staunch anti-apartheid activist;
3) further acknowledges that during her long literary career many of her books were banned by the apartheid government;
4) recalls that she was awarded the coveted Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991;
5) further recalls that in 1962 she helped edit former President Nelson Mandela's famous "I am prepared to die" speech;
6) recognises the role that Nadine Gordimer played in creating a free, just and equal South African society; and
7) conveys its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Nadine Gordimer.
Agreed to.
