Mr President, there is a growing tendency in society which would like us to believe that unity means forgetting the injustices of the past, which are manifested in the present by pervasive racism, race- based inequality, landlessness and continuing marginalisation of black people from the economic, social and cultural life in the country.
In fulfilling your responsibility to unite the nation, Mr President, what must be the premise of that unity? Should it not be a thorough going transformation of society that includes a rejection of colonialism and apartheid and all that represented, including the inclusion of Die Stem in our national anthem? Thank you very much. [Applause.]
