REPLY:
a) The National Commissioner has tasked the Division: Inspectorate, amongst
other duties, to report on the status of the management of exhibits,
especially firearm related exhibits, in the custody of the Service and
the management of official firearms in use within the Service. The
Inspectorates were tasked amongst other areas of focus, to look into the
various areas of concern relating to state firearms and exhibits (SAPS 13
property) in custody of the South African Police Service.
b) A quarterly report, highlighting the most prevalent findings, was
compiled and submitted to the management of SAPS for circulation to
cluster and station commanders in order for them to proactively address
the problems pointed out and to ensure that the same is mitigated
throughout all stations in the province. The Department ensures that
disciplinary actions are instituted against members who neglect their
work and corrective measures are put in place.
