450. Mr D V Bloem (COPE-FS) to ask the Minister of Police:
Whether a certain case (details furnished) has any impact on his department
with regard to (a) bringing his departmentâs standing into disrepute, (b)
the costs of the said personâs legal defence, (c) the long delays and
extended court appearances in restoring confidence in the justice system
and (d) the prejudice or jeopardy of the jobs of witnesses; if not, what is
the position in this regard; if so, (i) what lessons are learnt by his
department regarding the (aa) hiring and (bb) constant monitoring of
suitable candidates for such high positions, (ii) how much were the overall
legal costs of the defence of the said person that (aa) were paid or (bb)
are still to be paid by his department, (iii) what steps are his department
taking to recover these costs, (iv) when will the costs be recovered and
(v) what are the further relevant details?

REPLY:
This case has no impact on the South African Police Service. The said
person was employed by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council in Gauteng.
(a) The person was not employed by SAPS and the standing of SAPS was not
brought into disrepute.
(b) SAPS did not pay the said personâs legal defence. The relevant
metropolitan council should be able to answer to the costs relating to
his defence.
(c) SAPS did not play any role in the long delays and extended court
appearances.
(d) The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development should be
able to respond to any prejudice or jeopardy of the jobs of witnesses.
