(1) To date 13 hectares of the land has been developed and the breakdown is as follows:
- Rental Stock (3 hectares) and
- Breaking New Ground (10 hectares).
(2) Plans are in place to develop the remainder of the land which will include the following programmes: Finance Linked Individual Subsidies (FLISP), Breaking New Ground (BNG), Social Housing and Community Rental Units (CRU).
In the 2016/2017 financial year, the department has planned to implement:
- Social Housing Programme (316 units) – Budget R40 million and to start in November 2016.
- FLISP (22 units) – Budget R1.9 million and planned for November 2016.
- BNG (250 units) – Budget R17.2 million and planned for June 2016.
Due to budget constraints, a phased approach development will be applied until the entire 2600 units are achieved.
(3) The department established a project steering committee which comprises of all relevant stakeholders including labour unions representing mine workers as follows:
- Presidency –Department of Monitoring and Evaluation
- National Department of Human Settlements
- Office of the Premier (North West)
- Other sector Departments ( Labour, Energy, Environmental Affairs, Mineral Resource, Water and Sanitation and Government Communications and Information Systems)
- North West Department of Local Government and Human Settlements
- Rustenburg Local Municipality
- Housing Development Agency (HDA)
- Eskom
- Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU)
- South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO)
- Lonmin Mining Company.
