Mr S H Plaatjie (COPE-NW) to ask the Minister of Health:
(1) Whether he has been informed of the (a) cost-effectiveness and (b)
health benefits of a certain medical system (name furnished); if not,
what is the position in this regard; if so,
(2) whether the said medical system is available in the (a) public and
(b) private health sectors; if not, why not; if so, what are the
relevant details?

REPLY:
1) (a) Yes, the Allied Health Professions Act, 1982 (Act 63 of
1982) was legislated in cognisance of the contribution of
certain medical systems (including Ayurveda) in making
healthcare provision cost-effective.
(b) Yes, same as above.
2) (a) Yes. The diverse nature of the country has citizens
utilising different medical systems that are in the public and
private health sectors to address their healthcare needs. The
existing legislation, the Allied Health Professions Act,
includes the Ayurveda medical system so as to â
⢠promote and protect the health of the public;
⢠manage, administer and set policies relating to the
professions (including Ayurvedic profession) registered with
the Council;
⢠investigate complaints relating to the professional conduct
of practitioners, interns and students;
⢠administer the registration of persons governed by the
Council; and
⢠set standards for the education and training of intending
practitioners
(b) Yes, as stated in (2) (a) above.
