Mr N J van den Berg (DA) to ask the Minister of Communications:
Whether his department uses temporary employment services and/or labour
brokers; if so, (a) why, (b) how many positions have been filled by
temporary employment services in the (i) 2006-07, (ii) 2007-08 and (iii)
2008-09 financial years, (c) what percentage of the total staff complement
did temporary employment services contribute in each of these years and (d)
how much money has been spent on temporary employment services in each
year?

REPLY
a) The Department utilised the services of temporary employment services
for to assist during international conferences; to stand in for
employees who were on maternity leave, incapacity leave due to ill
health; and due to capacity reasons.
b) (i) During 2006/07, 18 positions were filled with temporary workers.
(ii) During 2007/08, 26 positions were filled with temporary workers.
(iii) During 2008/09, 10 positions were filled with temporary workers.
c) In 2006/07 temporary staff contributed to 5% to the total staff
complement, 3.2% for in 2008/09 and 9% in 2007/08.
d) In 2006/07 an amount of R458 977.62 was spent on temporary employment
services, in 2007/08 an amount of R1 011.065.47 and in 2008/09 an
amount of R636 357.09
