Madam Speaker, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes with sadness the recent brutal killing of four people at KwaMashu Hostel;
2) further notes that the killing of people, no matter which political party they belong to, is unacceptable;
3) also notes that more than 15 NFP members have been killed in hostels since the party's formation in 2011;
4) acknowledges the fact that all people who are killed, irrespective of their political affiliation, are members, relatives and breadwinners of their families;
5) observes that everyone - political parties, hostel dwellers, the government, the community and civil society - shares the responsibility of ensuring that there is stability and peace at these hostels;
6) acknowledges the fact that a multipronged approach is needed to deal with the situation in hostels, which could include -
a) improving the socioeconomic conditions at the hostels;
b) ensuring that police man the hostels 24 hours a day; and
c) urgently conducting an investigation and arresting the criminals;
7) conveys its condolences to the families of those who were brutally murdered; and 8) applauds all efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace at the KwaMashu and other hostels, like stationing more police there, bringing in crime intelligence and the Hawks, and engaging political parties, government, the community and civil society.
Agreed to.
