Speaker, this week is National Water Week. This gives us a chance to reflect on the progress with regard to providing clean water to all South Africa's people. Clean water is a basic human need, and access to clean water is a constitutional right afforded to all who live in our country.
How governments live up to their obligation to provide universal access to clean water reveals the extent to which they care about their citizens. The DA, especially in Cape Town, is proud of its record of water delivery as part of our mandate to deliver quality services to all the people. [Interjections.]
Order, hon members!
According to the Universal Household Access to Basic Services Index, Cape Town is the best performing municipality in terms of universal access to water. [Interjections.] A total of 100% of our citizens have access to water. [Interjections.] Furthermore, the city ...
Hon members, order! Let the speaker be heard.
... has one of the highest scores for municipal water standards with a mark of 98% for the Blue Drop certification programme.
We are also proud that this year Cape Town became the first winner of the Southern African Development Community, SADC, Water Demand Management Award. SADC has commended the city for the way in which it has managed leak repairs, pressure management and awareness campaigns.
The DA's record as the governing party in the City of Cape Town reveals our commitment to providing all residents with access to high-quality water on a sustainable basis. Thank you. [Applause.]
