The Northern Cape has unveiled a R17 million road maintenance fleet of vehicles and machinery at the newly renovated road maintenance plant in Kimberly, which is geared at improving roads, filling potholes and reducing the accident rate in the province. The poor condition of roads in the Northern Cape is more than likely due to the legacy of apartheid.
The ANC government in that province inherited the aged fleet of vehicles and plant. The new purchase includes a pothole patching machine, a Hofman road marker, 35 light delivery vehicles, eight multipurpose vehicles, six water tanks, three fuel tanks and seven - ton tanks.
The new equipment will be used to improve roadworks throughout the province. By improving roads and fixing potholes with the new equipment the department will save millions of rands in payments of claims to motorists.
The refurbished plant and new equipment will lead to a high level of service delivery as far as roads are concerned and to job creation on a large scale. Thank you. [Applause.]
