Chair, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes that South African Human Rights lawyer and academic, Rashida Manjoo, has been appointed as the new United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences;
2) recognises that violence against women not only violates human dignity, but also a number of basic human rights including the right to nondiscrimination, physical integrity, equality and freedom;
3) believes that Ms Manjoo, who has both taught and conducted research at a number of universities including Webster University, Harvard Law School, and the University of Cape Town, and has served with great distinction as parliamentary commissioner of the Commission on Gender Equality, will continue to make an important contribution towards enforcing equality and equal protection doctrines;
(4) wishes Ms Manjoo all the best in her new position; and
5) urges her to ensure that the dignity and rights of women everywhere are kept on the global agenda.
Agreed to.
