Infographic: 2016/17 National Crime Statistics

On Tuesday 24 March 2017 the South African Police Service (SAPS) briefed the Portfolio Committee on Police on the 2016/17 National Crime Statistics covering March 2016 to April 2017.

Contact crimes refer to those "crimes where victims themselves are the targets of violence or property is targeted and the victims in the vicinity during the commission of the crime are subjected to threats of violence or the use of violence." These crimes include murder, attempted murder and sexual assault. Important stats to note:

  • 19 016 murders recorded for the period under review, up 1.8% compared to the same period last year

  • 39 828 rapes recorded for 2016/17 - down 4%, but numbers show an average of 109 rapes reported to the police each day in South Africa.

  • Contact crimes such as murder (1.8%), attempted murder (0.4%) and aggravated robbery (6.4%) all increased

  • Most rapes reported in Gauteng (19%), KZN (18%) and Eastern Cape (17%) See infographic below for more statistics:
