Mr Marais holds both a B.Econ and MBA degrees from the University of Stellenbosch. Mr Marais originally worked in the corporate banking and finance sector then moved into marketing for SA wines. He was also part of the Wine Industry Steering Committee re-development of the Industry BEE Charter and Scorecard.
Mr Marais's political experience includes service with the Disability Sport Sector in SA, initially as President of DISSA (Disability Sport South Africa) which, during his tenure, was the National Paralympic Committee of South Africa. Since 2006 he has served as Vice President of the SASAPD (South African Sport Association for Physically Disabled), as an elected Board Member of the National Paralympic Committee of South Africa as well as an elected Board member of the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee. He also served for one term as Vice President of the African Paralympic Committee.
In 1995 Mr Marais became Mayor of Rawsonville and Goudini. He later became the Breede River District Council (Vice Chairperson) and eventually Breede Valley Municipality from 2000 before his election to the National Assembly as an MP for the DA in 2006.
