Mr Mdakane was deployed to work for the ANC underground in 1979. He was arrested in 1985 for involvement with student politics but was acquitted in 1989. He studied economics and African history at Khanya College. In 1994 he became a Member of the Gauteng Legislature and was also made Chief Whip of the ANC in the Legislature until 2004. He served as the Legislature's Speaker from 2004 until 2009. Mr Mdakane serves as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the Fifth Parliament (2014 - 2019)
