IJR: Invitation - Public Dialogue: After Al-Bashir?

IJR

According to the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR), the recent presence and non-arrest of Omar Al-Bashir, the President of Sudan, in South Africa, while he was attending the African Union (AU) summit, is, in many ways, a turning point in the way South Africa engages with the international justice architecture. This will have future implications for the International Criminal Court (ICC). It has also raised issues relating to constitutionalism, the rule of law and domestic politics in South Africa. What are the political and legal complexities precipitated by this situation? The Public Dialogue will ask difficult questions about South Africa’s legal obligations under the Rome Statute, and the fraught politics that defines international justice in a world of global inequality. The Dialogue will further interrogate the implications of the Al-Bashir non-arrest for the rule of law in South Africa. It will also look forward and ask: what should be expected in terms of South Africa’s relationship with the International Criminal Court?
