According to the latest statistics, the forestry production sector employed 46 000 people in 2007. The challenge is that the sector has recently moved from a net exporter to a net importer of forestry products. Forestry only contributed 1,6% to the manufacturing gross domestic product, GDP, and 0,3% to our economy as a whole. Our strategic objectives are to stabilise the sector and maintain existing jobs in the short term, and restore its status as a net exporter and position the sector for high end niche products and markets in the long term.
