The ANC welcomes the reading and writing clubs established by the Kwazulu-Natal, KZN, Arts and Culture department across KwaZulu-Natal which aim to improve literacy. More than 2 000 people have benefited from this programme thus far. The programme also seeks to promote the use of vernacular languages.
In total, there are over 50 clubs and they seem to be growing daily. What is encouraging about these clubs is that they are open to all people - the young and the old. It is also promising to note that the department has visited correctional services and set up 10 clubs in Qalakabusha, Westville and Kokstad prisons. Those who wish to pursue writing as a vocation are also encouraged to do so, and some who have published works assist with outreach programmes.
Mobile libraries on wheels also visit the four designated regions in the province, reaching out to those who wish to improve their reading and writing skills. I thank you.
