Speaker, I move the draft resolution printed in my name on the Order Paper as follows:
That the House -
1) notes with sadness the passing of academic and struggle stalwart, Dr Jean Swanson-Jacobs, on 7 July 2013 at the age of 57 after suffering a stroke;
2) remembers that Dr Swanson-Jacobs, also known as Jean Benjamin, became a Member of Parliament in 1997 and was appointed the Deputy Minister of Social Development from April 2004 to May 2009;
3) further remembers that her student political activism resulted in her expulsion from the University of the Western Cape in 1973 and her being forced into exile before relocating to London to avoid being subpoenaed as a state witness in the trial of Saths Cooper and 12 others for terrorist activities;
4) recalls that while she was abroad, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North East London in 1980, and on her return to South Africa she continued studying and obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy in Social Psychology in 1996;
5) further recalls that as a musical activist, she kept the flame of the struggle alive in exile by using her songs to remind and make the world aware of our struggle against apartheid;
6) recognises that in the Western Cape she was instrumental in the fight against alcohol and drug abuse and was very driven and committed to the cause; and
7) conveys its deepest condolences to her husband, Aubrey, and her three children Lindsey, Jeanine and Govan.
There was no debate.
Motion agreed to, members standing.
The condolences of the House will be extended to the family.
