Infographic: Prisoner rehabilitation in numbers

The United Nations Convention for prisoner rights has agreed on minimum standards which affords prisoners the same human rights as ordinary citizens. These rights guarantee the dignified treatment of prisoners while serving their sentence. South Africa’s Constitution, as well as the Correctional Services Act of 1998, echoes these rights, emphasizing the humane treatment of prisoners.

The purpose of ensuring prisoner rights is to oversee their successful rehabilitation, with those to be released back into society requiring proper psychological treatment.

On Wednesday, the Department of Correctional Services met with their parliamentary oversight committee, to discuss measures taken to ensure that prisoners are being adequately rehabilitated. The following infographic details their efforts.
