Dear Portfolio Committee on Basic Education,

Me and my family participated in the whole process of drafting the Bela Bill so far as the general public was allowed and requested to. Our plight has not changed, we reject the bill in its entirety:

The Children’s Act, 38 of 2005, compels parents to provide adequate care for their children. This responsibility of care includes: “guiding, directing and securing the child’s education and upbringing, including religious and cultural education and upbringing, in a manner appropriate to the child’s age, maturity and stage of development”. Clearly, the law recognizes that parents have a vital role to fulfil in the upbringing of children; no such role is ascribed to teachers or the state. I urge the committee to take a step back, think as parents and grandparents, take all the information you gathered in the passed months into consideration, do your own research or gather it from knowledgeable people and make informed decisions in the best interests of all the children of South Africa.

Kind regards
Lana Maree
