PETITION TO GENDER STREAM ROAD SIGNS, MAKING THEM MORE INCLUSIVE OF CHILDREN AND WOMEN
Date

Dear Portfolio Committee On Transport,
Seasons Greetings,

Honorable Parliamentarians, I have questions that my dad says that only The President, the Minister of Transport and Parliament can answer. The questions are,
1. When will women and children cross the road? They are stranded at the traffic lights because the traffic symbols only allow men to cross. In fact, in Cape Town next to the Civic Centre they have added a word sign saying, “Cross on green man only.”
2. Why are the traffic lights showing only men? There are women and children in society as well. My sister says that is sexist, I don’t know what that means, but parliamentarians one thing I know is that it is time for a change!
3. May I request that you ask the Minister of transport and Parliament to change the law to include women, children, the elderly and the differently abled in the traffic crossing. Traffic signs represent power because we all have to obey them. Power is nowadays shared between men and the rest of society unlike the olden days.

I have made a poster of this petition and It would be my great privilege and pleasure to hand this petition for a change to traffic signs to you the portfolio Committee, the speaker of parliament, the Minister of Transport and the President of our republic. as a reminder of working towards achieving this small but powerful change.

Road signs are symbols of power as they embody the law and MUST be obeyed. It is a subtle sign of patriarchy to have them being of only one gender-Men.

I look forward to further engagement with you on this issue in the new year.
