Baie dankie. [Applous.] (Translation of Afrikaans member's statement follows.)
[Ms L N MOSS (ANC): Speaker, in order to address the hunger for land and the unequal distribution thereof, the ANC remains committed to the implementation of its policy as well as to the restitution of the land rights of those whose land was expropriated due to forced removals and the redistribution of land under the apartheid government.
On Heritage Day, the Mamre community in Cape Town received the title deed to 4 200 hectares of farmland that were taken away from their grandparents by the apartheid government more than two decades ago. The handover by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform formed part of Mamre's Heritage Day celebrations. More than 2 000 households in this rural coloured community of Mamre benefitted from this transfer. In 1986 approximately 500 families were forced to sell their land to make way for the development of Atlantis. In June 2013, after a successful claim in 2010, 2 443 hectares of land were restored to the Mamre Communal Property Association.
The ANC is proud of the fact that history was rewritten in this community that was overcome with emotion when the land was finally restored. The land is now officially registered in their name, and they have full access to the land, as ensured by the ANC-led government. Thank you very much. [Applause.]]
