2701. Mr M A Nhanha (Cope) to ask the Minister of Defence and Military
Veterans:
Whether the SA National Defence Force has been able to fulfill its
obligations of increasing borderline protection responsibilities
requiring a mooted 22 troop companies; if not, why not; if so, what
(a) has been the (i) status and (ii) cost of this operation since 1
January 2010 and (b) are the further relevant details?

Yes, even with the limited resources at its disposal, the South
African National Defence Force (SANDF) has been performing its tasks
and obligations with regards to borderline protection through
Operation Corona.
The full deployment of the mooted troop companies has been hampered by
the current reduction in personnel that is a result of the budget
constraints.
The total expenditure from the 2010/11 to 2012/13 Financial Years was
R 1,1 Billion; and the total estimated expenditure for the current
financial year is R 816 Million.
