Internal question paper no:
171. Ms T G Mpambo-Sibhukwana (DA-WC) to ask the Minister of Social
Development:
(1) (a) How much will each orphaned child receive in respect of the
support by her department as a result of the tragedy caused by the
collapse of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Lagos, Nigeria and
(b) until what age will this benefit accrue to these children;
(2) whether this benefit is in addition to any other benefits or SA
Social Security Agency grant for which these children may be
eligible; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, what
are the relevant details? CW229E
Reply:
The type and the length of the interventions that the Department will put
into place will depend on the unique needs of each affected family. This
may go beyond providing financial assistance as each family circumstance
differs from one to the other. To this end, we have deployed social workers
to assist all of the affected families to provide trauma counselling and on-
going psychosocial support services. After the tragedy, the Department has
been preoccupied with helping families and individuals re-establish
normalcy in their lives. It would therefore be premature for me to talk
about the amount of money or additional benefits that the Honourable Member
is referring to in the question.
