About Liezl Linda van der Merwe

Ms Liezl Linda van der Merwe was first elected to serve as a Member of Parliament in May of 2012 at the age of 33. Ms van der Merwe has served on a number of portfolio committees including Communications, Social Development and Women in the Presidency, amongst others. She has also served on the joint committee for Ethics and Members' Interests, and the joint committee on Multi-Party Women's Caucus

Born on 1 October 1980, in Goodwood in the Western Cape, van der Merwe attended Panorama Primary School and Paarl Gymnasium High School where her interest in history and politics developed. Ms van der Merwe holds a Diploma in Journalism. She first joined the IFP in 2006 upon her return from London where she worked for UK broadcaster ITV. Prior to this, she worked for online news publications.

In the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), van der Merwe served as the Director of Communications. She then became a member of the IFP’s National Council – the IFP’s highest decision making body in-between conferences.

Van der Merwe regards herself as an activist for the rights of women and children and as a strong advocate and believer in servant leadership.
