Helen was born in the Eastern Cape and obtained a teaching diploma from Zonnebloem College in Cape Town and completed diplomas in business management and advanced bookkeeping. She first entered the political arena in 1992 after joining the DP. In 2000 she was appointed as s regional organiser for the DA and was subsequently promoted to Acting Director of the DA in the Western Region. She was first elected to Parliament in 2004 in the capacity of member of the National Council of Provinces. Prior to her current position of Shadow Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, she was Shadow Minister of Social Development of the DA. Source: DA (www.da.org.za).
