819. THE MINISTER OF TOURISM ANSWERS:
(1) The National Department of Tourism is not aware of the exploitation
of tourists in the past during major events like the Rugby World Cup
by those offering accommodation at very high prices. It is our
position that exploitation in this regard will harm the reputation of
South Africa as a destination.
(2) Those accommodation establishments that signed a contract with Match
signed an agreement with regard to the prices for their accommodation
establishments. In addition the Department made its position very
clear that an exploitation of the prices asked for accommodation
establishments will harm the reputation of South Africa as a
destination.
