QUESTION NO. 2379 NW2858E
INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO. 31 OF 2013
DATE OF PUBLICATION: 20 September 2013
Mr N J J van R Koornhof (Cope) to ask the Minister of Water and
Environmental Affairs:
Whether the SA National Parks (SANParks) have any plans in place to enlarge
the Mapungubwe National Park to protect it against further coal mining on
its borders; if not, why not; if so, what plans?
2379. THE MINISTER OF WATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS REPLIES:
No. The park has an existing buffer zone and a management plan. However,
the Department of Environmental Affairs commissioned an Environmental
Management Framework that will indicate where the sensitive areas are for
purposes of accommodating different land uses outside the National Park and
World Heritage Site.
