The HFCs are chemicals that are primarily used in air conditioning refrigeration and foam insulation. It was in this context that the following seven years of consultation, parties to the Montreal Protocol struck a landmark legally binding deal in the Rwandan capital of Kigali on 15 October 2016 to mandate countries to phase down the production and usage of hydrofluorocarbons, commonly known as the HFCs, to reduce the emissions of the greenhouse gasses in a move that could prevent up to 5 degree Celcius of global warming by the end of this century.
