Speaker, I would like to respond to hon Loretta Jacobus and agree with her that the arming of one faction of the conflict in Syria is a dangerous thing, particularly the response by some of the European Union countries. [Interjections.]
The only answer is not arming any side but negotiation - and negotiation among Syrians themselves. The danger is the funding of these rebels. Who are these rebels? The problem is that some of the factions among these rebels are classified by the very same countries as terrorist groupings. So, if you continue to fund people that you yourself have classified as terrorists, you know what danger you could be exposing the people of Syria to. So, I fully agree with hon Jacobus that we should support the efforts which are driven by some of the countries that there should be dialogue among the Syrians for lasting peace in the Syrian conflict. [Applause.]
