Meeting Summary

A Subcommittee of the Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration met to shortlist candidates for interviews for the Public Service Commissioner post at the Public Service Commission Board. The Subcommittee received 151 applications. The Subcommittee Members shortlisted 19 applicants. It was further resolved interviews should be held on 2, 3 and 4 November 2020.

Meeting report

The Chairperson indicated Members should not mention the names of the applicants they choose, but to only mention their reference numbers.

Mr C Sibisi (NFP) proposed the following numbers: 6, 133, 137, 151, 59.

Ms R Komane (EFF) proposed the following numbers: 22, 6, 137, 64, 151.

Ms M Lesoma (ANC) proposed the following numbers: 129, 128, 121, 108, 56, 47, 6, 30, 83, 119, 146.

Dr L Schreiber (DA) proposed the following numbers: 1, 44, 113, 135.

Ms V Malomane (ANC) proposed the following numbers: 6, 56, 147, 146, 56, 93, 87, 54, 22, 28, 47, 108, 121, 128.

The Subcommittee resolved to focus on the reference numbers of applicants that were suggested two and three times.

Dr Schreiber proposed that applicant 113 should be included in the list just to make it 20 even though it was suggested only once because the applicant boasts an impressive CV and an interesting background that needs to be considered.

Ms Komane insisted the Subcommittee should stick with the agreed 19 shortlisted applicants as they also have impressive CVs. She reasoned that if Dr Schreiber’s idea is allowed, then every Member would want to add other applicants with impressive CVs, and that would complicate the process.

The Subcommittee then agreed unanimously with the 19 shortlisted applicants.

The Subcommittee resolved to schedule the interviews for the 2, 3 and 4 November 2020.
