The Committee elected Mr Nchabeleng to be its chairperson.

The incoming chairperson thanked the Members for the appointment and assured Members that he would not be representing the African National Congress in the Committee but the Committee he was elected to chair, which consists of different political parties

 

Meeting report

Opening remarks
The Committee Secretary, Ms Noluthando Skaka welcomed everyone present and outlined that the Committee would be electing its Chairperson. As per Rule 91 of NCOP (National Council of Provinces) the Committee must on its first meeting elect one of its Members as the Chairperson of the Committee. The procedure outlines that the Committee Secretary would call for nominations and a seconder from the floor, if there is one nomination that person would be declared as the Chairperson of the Committee; but if there is more than one nomination, the names of the nominees would be put to a vote by a show of hands. After the end of the vote, a nominee with the majority of votes would be declared as the Chairperson of the Committee. Members can only vote once.

She proceeded to call for the nominations.
 
Nominations
Mr M Nchabeleng (ANC; Limpopo) was nominated by Ms N Ndongeni (ANC; EC) and seconded by Mr I Ntsube (ANC; FS).

The second nomination was for Ms M Gillion (ANC)(WC) by Mr M Bara (DA; GP) but it was not seconded.

It was therefore disregarded and Mr Nchabeleng was officially elected as the Chairperson of the Committee.

Chairperson’s remarks
Mr Nchabeleng thanked the Members for the appointment and assured Members that he would not be representing the African National Congress in the Committee but the Committee he was elected to chair which consists of different political parties.

Members congratulated the Chairperson and bade him well for his new position.

The meeting was adjourned.
