Seminar: Building Racial Antagonisms: State, Media & Society

cdra

What kinds of semiotic resources are used by the state, media and society, and how do these construct, reflect and conceal racial antagonisms?

Dr. Luis Escobedo is visiting the CDRA and will facilitate their next Social Change Practice Seminar on Thursday 14 July. Using theory and real life examples of discourses that represent the intersection between race, gender, class and nationality mainly in Singapore, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, the United States and South Africa, Luis will explain how a system of objects (e.g., images, marketing campaigns) that surround us in the daily basis in fact teach us the way to construct our social system.

When: Thursday 14 July, 8.30-15.00

Where: CDRA, 52-54 Francis Street, Woodstock

Who: Dr Luis Escobedo, Visiting Lecturer & Researcher of the Department of International Relations and Humanities at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) in Mexico

Contribution: R40 (for a light lunch)
